For a century, Keswick’s campus has been a place of care, connection, and community. From the earliest days to today’s reimagined spaces, the heart of Keswick has always been the people—residents, families, team members, volunteers, neighbors, and friends—who have shaped life here. Our history at our West 40th Street location dates back 100 years, to the 1925 acquisition of the former Egenton. Home, a home for orphaned girls, which had moved to a new location in Roland Park, thus leaving this six-acre campus available. '
The effort to move Keswick to a new property from the original building on Guilford and 21st Streets began as a “quiet campaign,” celebrating the 40th anniversary of Keswick’s long service as the Home for Incurables. The original building accommodated 57 women and girls and had a long waiting list. The new building, purchased with $160,000 raised over two years, could accommodate 110 patients, and the space would eventually allow Keswick to offer care for men as well as women.
As we celebrate 100 years on our campus, we invite you to share your Keswick story.
On August 9, 1926, the Baltimore Sun reported many of the residents had been awake all night in excitement before the big move. The Police and Fire Departments both assisted with the transfers, which were completed in just three hours. One elderly resident who had resided at the old building for many years, was very excited to be out on an adventure and urged the fire fighter behind the wheel to go faster, faster! The Sun also reported that “one of the residents, who for thirty years had not left the floor on which her room was located, told last night of the pleasure the automobile ride to her new home had given her.” At the time, the youngest resident was 19 and the oldest was 90.
